The Atlantic reported that the Peoples Temple, led by Reverend Jim Jones, orchestrated a mass murder of 908 followers at their Jonestown commune in Guyana. The incident occurred on November 18, 1978, after gunmen acting on Jones's orders murdered Representative Leo Ryan and others at a nearby airstrip.
