The Black Soldiers Who Changed the Meaning of the Civil War

Secretary of War Edwin M. Stanton and General William Tecumseh Sherman met with Black ministers in Savannah, Georgia, in January 1865, where Garrison Frazier expressed the desire of Black Americans to serve in the military and assist the government. Black soldiers served in segregated regiments, received unequal pay and equipment, and faced execution or re-enslavement if captured.
