Rural America’s Maternal-Health Crisis Is About to Get Much Worse

The Atlantic reports that rural maternal mortality rates are 81 percent higher than urban rates and that 60 percent of rural counties lack hospital-based obstetric care. Federal policy changes, including potential reductions in H-1B visas for foreign medical professionals, are expected to exacerbate these existing disparities and shortages in rural maternity care.
